Fishing is fun. It’s a combination of skills and a shared outdoor pursuit in a unique, mesmerizing environment. It’s the electric jolt that comes with every hook-up and the satisfaction of conquering a worthy adversary after a spirited battle. It is a universal sport that knows no age limitations or gender bias.

And yet it can be even more. Fishing can unite communities in a common cause, one that impacts lives while honoring a cherished friend. It can grow every year and raise more money in donations. Do that for nearly three decades with flair, in every shade of pink imaginable, and you’ll have the Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies Only Billfish Tournament.

The Alice Kelly format is release only and based on time. The team consisted of Kristina Shields, Deb Mears and Kristen Constantineau, with mates Rob Constantineau and Daniel Longstreet. Off Duty is based in Stuart, Florida and is owned by Paul Mears.

Outer Banks Community Foundation awarded ICO a Capacity Building Grant in the amount of $5,000. ICO was able to hire Crouch & Associates to come and perform a Board Orientation and help facilitate meetings to complete ICO’s Strategic Plan. This Strategic Plan will help ICO plan for the sustainability of its future. ICO was also able to purchase a new computer which gives the volunteers and staff the capability to serve the community with the necessary technology.

A big thank you to the entire Board and Staff at the OBCF for this amazing grant that will help ICO continue its mission of helping people who are facing a temporary emergency crisis for years to come.

ICO office is in Kill Devil Hills at 115 Mustian Street. If you’d like to make a donation, join their volunteer staff, or refer someone, ICO can be reached at 252-480-0070, PO 1663 Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. You can also visit our website at www.interfaithoutreach.com or visit us on Facebook.

This is how a community comes together to help one of their own: ICO and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation together with Church of the Outer Banks, business partners Macko Construction, Home Depot and Kellogg Supply worked to install a new fence for Frances Hughes, a 20+ year resident of Kill Devil Hills.

In 2013 Frances was diagnosed with cancer of the thyroid which she battled and beat.  In 2015, her husband, Ricky, was also diagnosed with stage IV brain cancer that spread through his body.  He fought for 2 years but was put in hospice care and passed away late last year.  The long years of their cancer journey and time spent away from their home placed a toll in Frances financially.  Her yard and fencing were damaged by Hurricane Matthew which she was unable to repair.  Her two dogs, Dutch and Tipsy, are her joyful companions.  A new fence was desperately needed for all of them.

You can see from these before and after photos what a difference can be made. Our thanks to Joe Gaca with Kellogg Supply who supplied all of the treated lumber, Home Depot who provided discounted fence and concrete material and John, owner of Macko Construction for organizing the project, from the amazing volunteers from “Church of the Outer Banks”, to John and staff for providing expert organization and installation of the fence.

“No one hears the cry of the poor or the sound of a wooden bell”
 – Haitian Proverb

The ICO Wooden Bell Award, crafted individually by Haitian artisans, brings this proverb to visibility as a symbol proclaiming the reality not only of impoverished Haiti but also as a symbol of the work of the Interfaith Community Outreach. In choosing the Wooden Bell to gift and mark the work of its Board Members, ICO testifies to its understanding and commitment as a caring community and solidarity with those in need. On May 17, 2018 ICO presented the Wooden Bell Award to the following individuals for their service as they retire from the Board of Directors: Dale Draper, Joan Fordham, Marie Neilson and Courtney Gallop.

2017 ICO CANCER OUTREACH CHAMPION: DEB MACDONALD

ICO Cancer Outreach Champion - Deb MacDonaldWhen you think of the Outer Banks Relief Foundation you immediately think of Deb MacDonald. ICO partners with the OBRF on many cases that reflect all aspects of the OBRF mission of assisting individuals on the Outer Banks who have been diagnosed with a debilitating disease. Deb rarely says “No” unless there is absolutely no way she can sell a case to her Board. She deals with clients with compassion and honest love. Deb MacDonald is one of the hardest working women we know, therefore, it is our pleasure to present her with the 2017 ICO Champion Award.

2017 ICO BUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEAR: DOMINION ENERGY

ICO Community Awards - Dominion EnergyDominion Energy is not just a Business Donor: they have sponsored events, and given annual grants. Not only have they contributed financially, their staff has been volunteering their time as intake volunteers, helping with fundraisers and other community projects. Over the years this relationship has grown to an amazing partnership. It has been a wonderful journey working with this business. ICO would like to present their Business Partner of the Year Award to Pam Pekrun, Dominion Energy North Carolina External Affairs Manager with Dominion Energy Services, Inc. for her commitment to serving the poor on the Outer Banks.

2017 ICO FUNDRAISER(S) OF THE YEAR: LOU WILLIAMS, SCOTT CHESSON & BRIAN KNOWLES

ICO Community Awards - Fundraisers of the YearPicture this … Big Lou and Mini-Me Scott dressed alike in make-up, dresses, wigs, flip flops decorated with rhinestones and flowers … and Brian going around to anyone who would listen and put money in his bucket! This is what you would have been able to see if you had been at the 2018 Womanless Beauty Pageant! These men went completely out of their “box” to raise money for ICO. They agreed immediately when we went to them and asked if they would help us.

On a serious side, these men are all heroes in our eyes and the eyes of all those who lose electric in a storm: they are out there in the middle of the storm or hurricane working to reconnect electricity. For the ICO fundraiser, they also went the extra mile and gave of their time, raised a lot of money before the event by selling tickets and solicited many donations. Dominion Energy and all of us are so fortunate to have these three dedicated men in our community.
