This week, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Dale, a dedicated and compassionate volunteer who has been a part of ICO since 2005—an incredible 20 years of service!

Dale’s journey with ICO began through his late wife, who was also a volunteer. She was a special education teacher with a deep commitment to the community, and her passion inspired Dale to get involved. Since then, he’s continued to carry on her legacy of service, becoming a steadfast presence at ICO.

A resident of the Outer Banks for the past 25 years, Dale brings a unique and vital perspective to his volunteer work as a veteran. His insights and advocacy have strengthened ICO’s veteran outreach program, helping to connect those who served with the resources and support they need.

Dale is deeply committed to building connections and uplifting others. He is passionate about advocating for people, recognizing how important and life-changing this work can be. Over the years, he has also been involved with Room In The Inn and Mano a Hermano, further extending his reach in the community.

Beyond ICO, Dale is an active member of the Veterans Advisory Council and the Marine Corps League, always striving to support his fellow veterans and those in need.

Dale, thank you for your decades of service, your heart for others, and the leadership you bring to our mission. You are truly making a difference every day. 💙

Today, Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) gathered to celebrate and honor the incredible service of longtime volunteer Bobbi Defenbaugh, who has been a devoted part of our organization since 2011.

A beloved member of our Wednesday volunteer crew, Bobbi has dedicated countless hours to ICO over the past 13 years. Her kind spirit, commitment to helping others, and strong presence have left a lasting impression on our team and the community we serve.

As Bobbi prepares to relocate to Florida to be closer to her family, today’s celebration was filled with warm memories, laughter, and heartfelt appreciation. It was a chance for staff, volunteers, and friends to come together and thank her for everything she’s done.

“Bobbi has been a shining example of what it means to serve,” said Jenniffer Albanese, Executive Director of Interfaith Community Outreach. “Her loyalty, compassion, and friendship have touched all of us. She’ll always be part of the ICO family, and while we’ll miss her deeply, we’re so happy for what lies ahead.”

Bobbi’s legacy will continue through the many lives she has impacted, and her seat at the Wednesday table will always be remembered with gratitude.

Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) is honored to announce a generous $53,000 donation from the Alice Kelly Memorial, part of the renowned Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament. These funds will directly support ICO’s Cancer Outreach Program, providing critical financial and emotional assistance to individuals battling cancer in the community.

ICO Executive Director Jenniffer Albanese and Cancer Outreach Coordinator Jean Freeman proudly accepted the donation on behalf of the organization. The Alice Kelly Memorial, named in honor of a beloved community member, continues to make a profound impact by supporting local nonprofits dedicated to helping those in need.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament and the Alice Kelly Memorial for their continued commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing the challenges of cancer,” said Albanese. “This donation will help us provide much-needed assistance to individuals and families in crisis, ensuring they receive the support and care they deserve.”

The Legacy of Alice Kelly

Alice Kelly, a passionate Outer Banks angler, was the inspiration behind the Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies-Only Billfish Tournament.

After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Kelly was forced to seek treatment outside the Outer Banks due to the lack of local cancer care facilities. Determined to support others facing similar challenges, she founded the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group in 1989. This volunteer-driven organization provided transportation for cancer patients needing out-of-town treatment. Local cancer care options did not become available on the Outer Banks until the mid-2000s.

Following Kelly’s passing, a group of friends, led by Mike Nolan, former sales director for Pirate’s Cove Realty, established the Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies-Only Billfish Tournament in 1989. The event was created to honor her memory and to continue raising funds for the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group.

In 2015, Interfaith Community Outreach absorbed the support group, expanding its reach and resources to provide even greater financial and emotional assistance to those battling cancer. Today, the Alice Kelly Memorial continues to uphold her legacy by funding ICO’s Cancer Outreach Program, ensuring that local cancer patients receive the support they need.

Interfaith Community Outreach remains dedicated to providing financial assistance and guidance to individuals undergoing cancer treatment. Donations like this ensure ICO can continue its vital mission of supporting those in need throughout the region.

This week, we’re honored to spotlight Linda, a dedicated volunteer who has been making an impact with ICO for over 20 years! 💙

Linda’s journey with ICO began with her husband, Bob, whose passion for volunteering inspired her to get involved. She was drawn to the opportunity to serve the community, knowing that ICO plays a vital role in helping individuals and families in Dare and Currituck counties who are facing temporary crises.

Her commitment to service has not gone unnoticed – Linda was recognized with the 2022 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for her outstanding dedication to ICO. Beyond her work with us, she is deeply involved in the community, serving as a Eucharistic minister, lector, and pastoral council member at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church. She has also served as past chair and committee member at the Outer Banks Hospital.

For Linda, the most rewarding part of volunteering isn’t just the impact she makes – it’s also the relationships she forms along the way. She cherishes the connections built with both the people ICO serves and the fellow volunteers she works alongside.

Having lived on the Outer Banks for 25 years, Linda has witnessed the challenges many in the community face, and through her service, she ensures that no one falls through the cracks.

Linda, we are incredibly grateful for your unwavering dedication, kindness, and commitment to making a difference. Thank you for all that you do! 🙌💙

This week, we’re celebrating Bobbi, a dedicated volunteer who has been an invaluable part of ICO since 2010! 💙

Bobbi first learned about ICO from a fellow volunteer who encouraged her to get involved. She started her journey with us back when the office was in Currituck, and ever since, she has been a compassionate and committed presence, helping both clients and fellow volunteers.

For Bobbi, the most rewarding part of volunteering at ICO has been the people – the clients she’s had the privilege to support and the friendships she’s built with her fellow volunteers. Her kindness and dedication have made a lasting impact on so many lives over the years.

After 18 wonderful years on the Outer Banks, Bobbi will soon be moving to Florida. While we will miss her greatly, we are so grateful for the time, energy, and heart she has poured into ICO. Her contributions have truly made a difference, and she will always be part of the ICO family!

Bobbi, thank you for everything you’ve done for ICO and our community. We wish you all the best in this next chapter! 💙

This week, we are honored to spotlight Bob, a true pillar of ICO who has been volunteering for over 20 years – since the very beginning! His dedication to serving those in need has been unwavering, even taking on leadership roles along the way. After a four-year break to serve as AARP president, Bob returned to ICO, continuing his mission to make a difference in the community.

For Bob, the most rewarding part of his work at ICO is helping those who might otherwise fall through the cracks. He believes that interfaith collaboration plays a crucial role in closing the gap for those in need, ensuring no one is left behind.

Bob’s journey with ICO began through his church, Holy Redeemer by the Sea, when the director was seeking a committee to assist with disaster relief – a program that later became an integral part of Interfaith Community Outreach. Over the years, he has served in various leadership roles, including head of disaster recovery and now as a member of the board of directors, where he has a unique perspective on both the hands-on work and the organization’s bigger picture. Bob enjoys having this perspective as it allows him to see the whole of the operation and ensure that ICO is doing what it should for our community.

Having lived on the Outer Banks for 24 years, Bob has seen firsthand the impact ICO has on the community. He values the shared mission and purpose that unites everyone at ICO, making it a great place to serve alongside like-minded, compassionate individuals.

Bob, we are incredibly grateful for your leadership, commitment, and the heart you bring to ICO. Thank you for all that you do! 💙

This week, we are thrilled to highlight Joan, one of our dedicated volunteers at ICO! Joan joined our team in October and has been making a meaningful impact ever since.

Inspired by Teresa and other volunteers, Joan felt drawn to ICO and the opportunity to give back. What she loves most about volunteering here is the one-on-one connections — listening to people’s stories, offering support, and making a real difference in their lives.

A resident of the Outer Banks since 2012, Joan is no stranger to community service. She devotes much of her time to volunteering and especially enjoys spending her Wednesdays at ICO, helping those in need.

Joan, your kindness and commitment inspire us all! Thank you for being such an important part of ICO. 💙

This week, we are celebrating Teresa, a dedicated ICO volunteer who has been giving her time and heart to our organization for the past two years! 💙

For Teresa, volunteering isn’t just about lending a helping hand — it’s about truly making a difference. She finds fulfillment in connecting one-on-one with clients, listening to their stories, and doing her part to support those in need. This experience has given her a deeper understanding of the foundational needs in our community, motivating her to be part of meaningful change.

Teresa believes that everyone should volunteer in some way to gain perspective on different walks of life. For her, this work keeps her humble and reminds her of the power of community.

Though she became a homeowner in 2013, Teresa made the Outer Banks her permanent home just three years ago. We’re so grateful that she chose to share her time and compassion with ICO!

Thank you, Teresa, for your dedication and heart — you are making a lasting impact! 🙌
