ICO 2017 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: WALTER GALLOP

Walter has been a Currituck volunteer with ICO since the very beginning. Born and raised in Point Harbor, Walter served 30 years as an Air Force Chaplain and brought his grace and outreach experience to the people of Currituck. He convinced them to work together to serve the most vulnerable regardless of race, religion, gender or national origin. In addition, his compassion and hard work brought together 26 Currituck faith communities to partner with ICO. His Air Force Chaplain experience gave him a perfect solution; spread God’s word and give hope to a broken world.

Walter’s technical skills allowed him promote ICO in a professional and clear manner. He is also known as a peacemaker and a convincing arbitrator and he felt concern in feeding the hungry. His leadership accomplished the uniting of the faith communities in Currituck to formulate three new food programs and he worked with pastors to develop food drops in Grandy and an Angel Food coop in Harbinger.

Walter served as an intake volunteer on Wednesdays. ICO is far better off because of Walter’s enthusiasm and leadership. Walter’s humility never wants center stage, he easily and graciously stands back to let others take credit. His generosity and understanding of the basic needs of people physically, emotionally and spiritually give hope to those in desperate situations. Walter gave his time and talent to ICO. His generosity is a template for us all.

Walter is retiring from ICO in order to provide loving care for his wife, Penny. A simple thank you will never be enough. Walter Gallop is the Interfaith Community Outreach 2017 Volunteer of the year. ICO is a better place for having you as part of us for so many years.
